A deep nihilistic wound was opened when Nietzsche declared that God was dead (Nietzsche) and the poisoned dagger of moral relativism sliced into the heart of Western civilization. As the 19th Century drew to a close, broad acceptance of Christian morality was on life support. Progressives, describing themselves as cultural medicine men, presented society with a cure: the State. Thus began one of the most horrific, catastrophic, life-stealing centuries the world has ever known.
Philosophers, political scientists, sociologists, and tinkerers of every imaginable academic field sought to structure the perfect State within which man might operate. In pursuit of these utopian pipe dreams, 20th Century governments participated in the deaths of an estimated 262 million people. (R.J. Rummel) For context, the 1800’s saw an estimated 45 to 85 million ‘man made’ deaths. (Matthew White) The altar of the State requires constant sacrifice. Explosive, overreaching government intrusion into the affairs of man demanded the sacrificial march proceed unrestrained.
Society’s supposed progressive saviors baptized the world in blood, annihilating entire generations of men on battlefields from Mexico to Morocco to Malaysia.
The world’s stubborn refusal to become Eden without the return of Christ caused a hiccup in the plans of these progressives, but only a temporary one. In place of military conquest, the social planners have settled upon environmental alarm-ism as one of the primary levers by which further authority will be wrested from the weakening hands of Westernized man.
One hundred years ago, phrenology, eugenics, and superman theories dominated scientific journals. Today, you can’t open a magazine, watch a commercial, listen to a news program, or go to the movies without something being said regarding the dire state of the environment.
The latest example of environmental worship comes from Congressional Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. That AOC is an authoritarian zealot is without doubt, but her understanding of progressive environmental doctrine is even more impressive. Under the pretext of honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his urgency to address racism, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez stated in an interview that ‘…the world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.’ (Tom Elliott)
To be clear, the State is a necessary, God-ordained institution. (Romans 13:1) Taking care of the earth, whether one believes in the man-made global warming theory or is viciously opposed to it, is also a right and good thing. God commanded man in the Garden to fill and subdue the earth. (Genesis 1:28) I’m pretty sure destroying, polluting, and consuming it wasn’t what He meant.
In the end, however, when man mistakes the command for the Commander, we veer horribly off the rails.
Even Dr. King agreed:
“One cannot worship this false god of nationalism and the God of Christianity at the same time. The two are incompatible and all the dialectics of the logicians cannot make them exist together. We must choose whom we will serve.” (Martin Luther King Jr.)
“We must come to see that science only furnishes us with the means by which we live, but never with the spiritual ends for which we live.” (Martin Luther King Jr.)
